I think it was Andrew Eldritch himself who looked otherworldly and alien which was the point I guess. A huge monument of colossal goth spewing out into a startled pop universe. Now I never knew this but apparently it was produced by Jim Steinman of Meatloaf fame which seems an unlikely coming together but it worked and might explain the vastness of the song. Supposedly the lyrics are about previous band members leaving to form the aforementioned The Mission — again something I was unaware of at the time. Did I like it? Yes I did although I was never going to convert to being a goth on the back of it. I loved this song by The Housemartins Joe Fagin - Why Dont We Spend The Night (Vinyl) had a real buzz to it I thought. Absolutely frenetic. As ever, there is always an Icicle Works song in this section. Why oh why did they only ever have one Top 40 hit? It really is a national disgrace. I bought this one on cassette single and played it incessantly. I loved it. I had no idea who The Band were at the time nor that this was their song — I just thought it was a massive, towering and superb song and still do. Absolutely criminal that not one of them was a hit. I read somewhere that The Waterboys have more former members than The Fall! Listening to the lyric now, they seem incredibly prophetic and applicable to todays unstable world with its references to the stupidity of materialism and hints at the environmental damage being done to the planet. It did to me. The band even show their rock credentials by whigging out as the song goes helter -skelter towards its conclusion. Damn those mocking birds! Another artist failing to make the charts with the third single release from their album at this time was Paul Young. I first became aware of That Petrol Emotion when in the second year at Poly. Part of me was impressed and part of Joe Fagin - Why Dont We Spend The Night (Vinyl) was intimidated by him. At the end of the meeting me and my co-music editor Rich had a word with him with a view to getting him on the team and he seemed keen but we never saw him again. Maybe he saw through us as being the charlatans that we were well me anyway, Rich was always the cool one. Why is it that some bands are massive in the US but do the total sum of zip, nothing, Joe Fagin - Why Dont We Spend The Night (Vinyl) in their native UK. There are more examples of this than you might think. Another case in point are Wang Chung. No Limits? You remember No Limits surely? Presented by Jenny Powell? Come on. Jenny Powell! Wang Chung are still a going concern regularly touring with another of those bands that were bigger in the US than over here and who are also featured in this post Cutting Crew. That was My abiding memory of this record though is hearing it played at full blast Joe Fagin - Why Dont We Spend The Night (Vinyl) the walls of my second year student house by our annoying neighbours. When it finally emerged blinking into the unyielding light of the shiny world of pop, nobody cared. So why did it only make No 45 over here? Who knows but like many of the songs in this section, it was a bigger hit in the US where it made No One last thing, does one of the women in the video look a bit like Karen Grant from Brookside if you squint a bit maybe? After looking like world conquering chart stars throughout the best part of the year, why did their fortunes wane so quickly.? They are still a live act to this day on the nostalgia circuit with Datchler having returned to the fold. And quite why did Johnny hate jazz so much? So there really was a Johhny who hated jazz. Scarlet Fantastic — This lot were definitely a one hit wonder but what a hit! I did a little and I mean little Twitter poll to see what considered the most ridiculous name and it was those Living In A Box chaps. Some research for my TOTP blog. A lovely sedate tune for ambling along to during a long run. Great timing! New Hits Friday review. Should have been Christmas number one! Another great pop track. Awful interpolation that has me running screaming for the comfort of the original every single time. I Joe Fagin - Why Dont We Spend The Night (Vinyl) this one a bit forgettable, though the tune is very pleasant when I do remember how it goes. Still love the retro feel on this track. Straight out of ! Well, apart from the NSFW lyrical content. Liked it when it came out, love it now! Great stuff. Nice tune, too. This one makes me really uncomfortable! Not complaining though, because this is an absolutely beautiful tune that has deservedly just scored a seventh week at number one. Song of the year, whatever happens in the next eight months. One of those tracks that I found a bit slow to begin with and have grown to appreciate. Lovely acoustic track from the A Star Is Born soundtrack no interest in seeing the film, but the song is gorgeous. Another one where the Now! One of the tracks from the Greatest Showman Reimagined album, where pop stars do karaoke versions of the songs from the musical. The Radio 2 demographic, if you like. Love this kind of epic tune!
