However, unlike Utopia, in which Rundgren had limited himself to playing guitar, most of the synthesizers on Initiation were played and programmed by Rundgren himself.

At over sixty-seven minutes, Initiation is one of the longest commercially-released LPs due to a plastic shortage. In order to keep the album on one vinyl LP Rundgren had to limit and EQ the master so the bass response was rolled off to keep the grooves small enough to cut onto a single disc, he also had to speed up the first half of Side One Real Man-Eastern Intrigue and speed up the entirety of Side Two to eliminate minutes from each side 5.

The album's original inner sleeve included a note which stated: "Technical note: Due to the amount of music on this disc over one hourtwo points must be emphasized. Firstly, if your needle is worn or damaged, it will ruin the disc immediately. Secondly, if the sound does seem not loud enough on your system, try re-recording the music onto tape. By the way, thanks for buying the album. The titles and concept are taken directly from Alice A. All music guide: the definitive guide to popular music.

(Vinyl. His throat is ripped to shreds. As the last chords die, the merciless silence bears witness to the fact that everyone in the audience has split. Our hero sighs and drops dead on the spot. This is the cerebral side. In fact the last song is so cerebral it's almost embarrasing. My original idea for this side was a series of songs with sing along choruses.

All the songs were performed live and there were no over-dubs. The people that showed up were the people who sang and played, meaning that anyone who happened to be in the studio or in the neighborhood and didn't have anything better to do came in to play.

Everybody, including me, learned the songs immediately prior to recording them, so most of it is spontaneous to a degree. Anyway, I decided it would scan better if I drafted it into a sort of operetta, that kind of thing being very popular nowadays. Manufactured and marketed by Rhino Records. Records, Inc. It is a rare occasion when Rundgren works with others in the studio as he usually plays all of the instruments himself on his records and he does do that on the first three sides of this album but he got some other players together to join him for "live in the studio" tracks that take up much of side 4 of this 2 record set, Rick Vito was one of these players and he's listed as playing guitar on the album's last track, the screaming gruff strutting rocker "Slut" on which I think Rick's guitar can be heard best on the song's main intro phrase licks in a slidy fashion.

The live in the studio tracks then kick in with "Dust in the wind" I Went To The Mirror - Todd Rundgren - Something / Anything? (Vinyl is a horn LP busy vocals ballad followed by "Piss Aaron", a New Orleans flavored novelty. Then we get I Went To The Mirror - Todd Rundgren - Something / Anything? (Vinyl bright heartfelt top 5 hit "Hello it's me". The echoy sax led rocker "Some folks is even whiter than me" comes next and "You left me sore" is shuffling bouncy pop.

As for the rest, side 1 kicks off with the underrated piano chunking top 20 hit "I saw the light" which is followed by the Bread-ish type ballad "It wouldn't have made any difference", the clapping rocker "Wolfman Jack", the mid tempo chirper "Cold morning light", the up-ish jingler "It takes two to tango This is for the girls " and the slow melter "Sweeter memories". Side 2 starts with an entertaining one minute spoken piece labeled "Intro" in which Todd teaches us where to spot studio "errors" notably hiss, hum, bad editing and "punch outs" in analog tapes.

The rest of side 2 is "Breathless" which is a tropical sounding instrumental"The night the carousel burnt down" a lightweight bouncer"Saving grace" a whimsical medium paced skipper"Marlene" a plinking slow-ish ballad"Song of the Viking" up beat pep and "I went to the mirror" a piano mumbling dragger.
